Public Speaking 230 Informative I. College students are not eating the proper foods or the recommended daily allowances even though they believe they are eating healthy. A. Illustration Suzanne- Started nibbling on potato chips between meals and late at night. – To keep up with studies, she cut back on swimming. – She would prepare her self by eating what she thought was healthy, granola bar or a frozen yogurt. – Larger breakfast- orange juice, bacon, sausage, eggs, hash browns, toast with butter and jam, and black coffee instead of fruit juice, cereal, and skin milk she had always ate at home. – By dinnertime she was starved, she loved fried chicken and a helping or two from the salad bar alternative to french fries. Eric- – Found himself in a similar pattern. – Putting a lot of time into keeping up with his course work – Spending less time than before on sports and bike riding – Eating fast-food restaurants, – Skipping meals from time to time. – Eating candy bars for lunch several times a week Before the semester was over, Eric’s friends started teasing him about the spare tire around his waist, and Suzanne was having trouble zipping up her clothes that fit her perfectly a couple of months earlier. During WWII, a food and Nutrition Board was established as a part of the National Research Council of the National Academy of Sciences (Arlin, M.C. The Science of Nutrition). The objective was to provide standards to serve as a goal for good nutrition. Recommended allowances for nutrients are amounts intended to be consumed as part of a normal diet. B. US Department of Health and Human Services stated in The National Adolescent Student Health Survey that most students know that excessive consumption of fat, sugar, and salt increases one’s risk for specific health problems, and most student cannot choose between common foods on the basis of their fat, sugar salt, or fiber content. IV. The key to good nutrition is a varied diet that includes every kind of nutrient. The Food Guide Pyramid calls for limited daily servings of fats, dairy products, oil and sweets: more servings of fruits and vegetables; and  even greater potions of bread, cereals and pastas. A. Meat, Poultry, Fish Group- 2 servings B. Fruit and Vegetable Group- 5 to 6 servings C. Bread Group- At least 4 servings D. Dairy Group- 3 servings should be included in a daily diet. V. Despite the continual changes in food products, one-factor remains constant- food is the only source of nutrition we have, regardless of how, when and where it is prepared. We can’t always dictate how food reaches us, but we can be nutritionally knowledgeable. We can learn to meet our nutritional need in the reality of today’s eating patterns.

English Persuasive Essay -Marijuana Essay

This essay will attempt to persuade its readers that the use of marijuana is in actual fact more dangerous than is generally thought. Marijuana is a mixture of dried, shredded leaves, stems, seeds, and flowers of the hemp plant. Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol is the active hallucinogenic in marijuana. Marijuana is smoked, chewed and eaten in various methods and forms. This has adverse psychological, physical and behavioural effects on to those who consume it. Immediately after consuming the narcotic one may experience harmful effects from marijuana use such as hallucinations, paranoia, psychotic episodes, impaired coordination, impaired motor ability and extreme mood swings The anxiety can range anywhere from mild anxiety to complete panic. The THC in marijuana is believed to change a psychoactive compound in the liver, which may be the cause of the psychological and subjective effects. The psychological effects of marijuana are most often seen in altered perceptions of distance and time, impaired memory and physical coordination, and a heightened sensitivity of the visual and auditory senses. Marijuana has often been touted as one of the safest recreational substances available. This is perhaps true; many reputable scientific institutions, such as the National Medical Board support the conclusion that cocaine, heroine, alcohol, and even cigarettes are more dangerous to the user’s health than marijuana. Smoking marijuana regularly damages the cells in the bronchial passages, which protect the body against inhaled micro-organisms and decrease the ability of the problems with memory and learning; distorted perception, trouble with thinking and decision making, loss of motor coordination; and increased heart rate. Long Term effects of marijuana may include: the loss of brain cells, lung cancer, chronic bronchitis, energy  loss, slow confused thinking, apathy, and blood vessel blockage. According to the National Association of State Alcohol and Drug Abuse, 44% of people who had an extensive history of smoking Marijuana developed forms of psychosis and schizophrenia. Although there are celebrated pharmacological properties of cannabis have led some states in Australia to permit its use as a therapeutic drug for, among others, those suffering from AIDS; various painful, incurable and debilitating illnesses; the harmful side effects of cancer chemotherapy, and glaucoma However, it would be fallacious to conclude that because the chemicals in marijuana have been found to present fewer dangers than some very harmful substances. In a recreational context, marijuana has been shown to affect health, brain function, and memory. Marijuana contains five times the amount of tar and more carcinogenic than a normal cigarette. The consumption of marijuana has been proven to have unpleasant effects on the users behaviour. All forms of marijuana are mind-altering. One is subjected to extreme mood swings and neurotic behaviour when experiencing withdrawal symptoms. Marijuana can be a gateway drug, which means it can lead to the use of many other harmful drugs. According to the study by the Queensland State Resources and Services Related to Alcohol and Other Drug Problems 1995, Children ages 12-17 are 85 times more likely to use cocaine after using marijuana. One may say that marijuana is harmless, that it does not cause one to convulse or dehydrate as other harder drugs such as ecstasy or heroin would; that there are no dangers with overdosing. However this is not the case. Marijuana affects memory, judgment and perception. Prolonged use of marijuana can have detrimental effects on one’s life and peers. This may generate a loss of interest in appearance, schoolwork/work and life. There are also subjective effects refer to those effects that are going to change from person to person. Euphoria, lowered inhibitions, drowsiness, contentment, and relaxation are generally the desired effects of people who use marijuana. As the video illustrated marijuana has serious effects on ones ability to safely, marijuana use can make it difficult to judge distances and react to signals and sounds on the road. A majority of people,  who smoke marijuana, may habitually consume alcohol in conjunction with marijuana. This would increase one’s chances of involvement in a car accident. Thus concluding, that with the combination of the adverse psychological, physical and behavioural effects smoking marijuana has it on the human body, it is far more dangerous than is generally thought.

Analysis of Conspiracy - 1285 Words

Source Analysis: Conspiracy Conspiracy is a 2001 film directed by Frank Pierson and written by Loring Mandel, the film dramatizes the events of the Wannsee Conference of 1942, and the meeting was led by Heydrick. During the Wannsee Conference the senior officials of the Nazi regime had meeting to discuss how to remove the Jewish population from the German sphere of influence (Poland, Latvia, Estonia, Czechoslovakia and France). The director interestingly brings an aspect of Nazi psychology; Pierson highlights the casual attitudes that the senior officials had during the conference towards the ‘Jewish problem’. Within two hours the senior officials seem to casually discuss the most practical way of eliminating the Jewish race and†¦show more content†¦However Eichmann did confirm in his 1962 trail that after the meeting had ended the men became less restrained and freely discussed killing methods however this was deleted the official summary and replaced with one sentence. The film overplays the role of the Wannsee conference; Gerlach argues that the meeting occurred not to discuss the fate of Jews in Europe but for Heydrick to seek support from other senior officials. The conference was originally schedule for the 9th of December but happened on the 20th of January giving Heydrick time to prepare the new task based Hitler’s ‘basic decision’. Unlike other Historical source the film industry seem to have shallow research which it tends to exaggerate, this is one of the issues with this film. For this film to be an adequate historical source it should have not put so much emphasis on the conference and also focused to the prior events. Also the film does not address Hitler’s role in the final solution, most historical sources on this topic have done so, and Hitler’s role is one most controversial aspects of this topic. The relevance of the conference is widely debated amongst scholars, with conventional Historian arguing that the murdering of Jews had begun at the latest in December 1941 long before the conference. Page 4 of 50 COURSE REQUIREMENTS: The student will draft, revise, edit, and finalize one short writ ing assignment, one thesis assignment, three full-length essays, and a final exam. The shorter writing will be about one page. The longer essays should be three to four pages each on a topic of the students selection within the assigned method of development. Students must complete all assignments and the final exam to pass the course. The first assignments will receive extensive instructor comments. The later assignments will involve continued instructor guidance, but to a lesser degree as the expectations increase for the student to demonstrate improved skills. Since a great deal Of learning happens When we revise our writing, the student is expected to revise at least two of the works and receive an improved grade on the revised compositions. (A Writers Reference defines revision in section G). Furthermore, students may rewrite any particularly weak essay or assignment throughout the course to improve overall learning and class grade, with instructor approval. The Final Exam will be a proctored essay to include the full writing process within the three hours allowed.
